Dracula and vampire myth

Nov 23rd 2012 ai??i?? March 24th 2013 the Triennale di Milano presents an exhibition dedicated to one of the most articulate and charming ancient legends: Dracula and vampire myth.

The exhibition ai??i?? conceived, produced and planned by Alef-cultural project management in partnership with La Triennale di Milano in collaboration with the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna ai??i?? with about 100 works, including paintings, engravings, drawings, documents, historical objects, costumes and video – faces and investigates the vampire by definition, starting from the historical feature to proceed with the literary transfiguration, up to the movie adaptation, and finally, the sociological implications of the myth of Dracula. A genuine journey into the vampireai??i??s world that analyzes at the same time the historical and the contemporar feature, browsing old objects and current design features, ancient myths and todayai??i??s stars.

Writer Bram Stoker (died in 1912) published the novel Dracula in 1897.

The world celebrates the centenary of his death with a series of important events. The exhibition is an opportunity to pay homage to the Irish novelistai??i??s literary creature.

The different aspects of the vampirism phenomenon are then faced in three main sections: ai???The reality behind the mythai???, curated by Margot Rauch, conservator at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, from which comes a series of exceptional historical documents and works of art including Count Vlad ai???s first portrait, fifteenth century historically figure and associated with the legend of Dracula; ai???Bram Stoker: Draculaai??? in collaboration with the Bram Stoker Estate, which offers a reflection on the vampirism in literature with particular attention to Stokerai??i??s production deepened through notebooks and papers of the novelist, exposed for the first time in Italy; ai???Dying of the light: cinema and vampiresai??? by film critic Gianni Canova, through original posters and video projections immerses us in the history of vampirism on the big screen, from the first film in black and white at the beginning of the twentieth century up to the sagas of recent years. Particular attention is paid to ai???Bram Stokerai??i??s Draculaai??? (1992) by Francis Ford Coppola. Some original storyboards from that movie, for the first time in Italy, are also displayed. For the occasion it is also shown the armor worn by Gary Oldman ai??i?? by the costume designer Ishioka Eiko ai??i?? exceptionally rebuilt by Hollywood producers of the original one.

The exhibition is enriched, then, from two interesting variations on the theme. The historian costume Giulia Mafai offers an original interpretation of the identity of the vampire and, in particular, the female vampire. Beautiful theatrical costumes provide a particular look to the figure of the ai???Vamp Womanai???, a creature ai??i?? historically featured by Elizabeth Bathory and by Carmilla in literature ai??i?? who adds to the feminine vampire the concept of woman who destroys through the power of seduction.

Together with Lai??i??Uomo Vogue is brought to life a fascinated connection: a selection of un-deads fashion suggestions through images of labels that have been inspired by vampire style and have become masters of that genre. From Comme des GarAi??ons, to John Galliano, from Alexander McQueen to Rick Owens until the recent interpretation by Prada.

Costume and fashion open the door to the ai???Design of the Vampireai??? through a story made by pictures of the homes and places attended by the king of the night, with a reflection on the role of Dracula as a ai???founder of citiesai??? designed by architect Italo Rota.

A special tribute dedicated to Guido Crepax enriches the exhibition: eighteen unpublished drawings illustrate the encounter between Dracula and Valentina, one of his most famous characters.

Scenic reconstructions and evocative projections, along the exhibit path, will accompany the visitor toward an emotional experience of discovering the world of un-deads.

A deeply valuable initiative is promoted together with Avis, Association of Italian Volunteers for Blood: on the occasion of ai???Dracula and the vampire mythai??? Avis will promote its activities and sensitize public awareness of the values of giving and solidarity.
